Girl Guides NZ Brownie Uniforms 1977- 2012

Above are two books about Brownies which is part of the Girl Guides.  The Brownies and the Wedding Day was first published in 1974. My book is a Knights Book edition 1980. The Brownies and the Christening was first published in 1977. My book is a Knights Book edition 1979. The books reminded me of when I went to Brownies in the 1950's!   I was also a Tawny Owl in the 1980's when my two younger daughters went to Brownies.  Brownies is for girls aged seven to ten years old to attend.

Lauren is wearing a replica of the New Zealand Brownie uniform that was worn in 1977. I made my eldest daughter's Brownie uniform and made one for a doll at the same time.  The Brownie handbook was printed in 1982.

Skipper is wearing the 1977 Brownie uniform and is standing by the correct hand book used at that time.

These are the badges my daughter earned during 1977 – 1979.   The triangular badges were sewn on  the long sleeve of her uniform.

I knitted this doll with the new style Brownie uniform in 1983. I adapted a Jean Greenhowe knitting pattern. The packet of Girl Guide biscuits is 2012.

The Cabbage Patch doll is wearing a replica of the  Brownie uniform that was worn from 1980 to 1985.  The material is the same material used for the Brownie uniforms for the girls.

This cloth doll is wearing the Brownies uniform that was worn in 1985 to 1992. The doll is approx 42 cm and the NZ Guiding Association had her for sale.

This cloth doll is wearing the Girl Guide uniform blouse and shorts. The other photo shows the Girl Guide’s winter uniform of a sweater shirt and long pants. It could be 1985 to 1992. The doll is 43 cm long.

This is the doll that the NZ Girl Guiding Association has for sale at the moment, (October 2012).  The doll is wearing the present day Brownie Uniform.  You can buy the doll undressed and you choose if you want the Brownie uniform or the Guide uniform.  The Brownie handbook beside her is a ring binder and is been used at the moment (2012).

This book is about a girl who goes to Brownies . No date of publication but it looks like it could be in the 1950’s.

Jana's Circus Life part 2

Jana is watching the clown who is teaching his dog to perform to the music he is playing.

The chimp is practising her routine.  She cycles round the ring on a Penny Farthing bike to the post box.  After the poodle posts the letter the chimp gets off the bike and opens the back of the post box. The chimp takes out the sack of letters and carries it on the bike and cycles around to the other side of the ring to the entrance where she hands the post bag to a clown.

Mr Galliano’s Circus by Enid Blyton was first published in Great Britain in 1938 by Newnes. This book was published by Hinkler Books Pty Ltd in 2003 and is an abridged edition.

Huxley Pig at the Circus by Rodney Peppe.  Huxley has a circus adventure when he puts on a clown’s outfit from the old suitcase his granny gave him.  He goes to the circus and gets more than he bargained for when he meets his friend Horace who tells him to hop into the clowns fire engine.  This book was published by Fantail Publishing in 1989.

Jana is practising her routine with the dogs, (in the new Big Top tent) when her cousin comes over to her and asks if he could borrow a dog to do his new trick with which is putting a dog in the cannon and firing the dog to the other side of the tent where a clown or Jana can catch it.  The dogs look at each other in dismay. None of them wants to volunteer to do that.

Jana asked her cousin why he doesn’t use one of his monkeys for that trick.  He answered  that the monkey won’t stay in the cannon long enough for it to be lit and fired.  He has successfully taught one of his monkeys to ride a unicycle around the ring.

Come to the Circus by Enid Blyton was published by DEAN& SON, LTD. 1974.

Circus by Maureen Gregson was published by Corgi/Carousel in 1975.

Pollyanna

I brought Pollyanna Grows up about six weeks ago at a book fair. Before that I never knew there was a sequel to Pollyanna. The Pollyanna book in the photo has a lot of drawn pictures in it and is not the same one I read years ago.

This is a Pollyanna doll which is 74cm high and has a replaced wig and is not wearing the original dress.

Tina's Birthday

Today is Tina’s birthday and she has invited Carol, Bridget, Julie and  Rosa to come to her party this afternoon.   She is having a Mickey Mouse themed birthday party.

The girls have arrived with their birthday presents for Tina.

They have been invited inside and sit down on the floor while Tina opens her presents.
Julie’s present to Tina is a Ginny heart necklace which has Ginny on one side of the heart and 1999 on the other side. Tina happily smiles and says it is beautiful.

Tina opens Bridget’s present next and it is a big Hannah Pepper doll.   “Wow!” Exclaims Tina, ”this is the biggest doll I have seen.”

Rosa’s present to Tina is a Mickey Mouse ball. Tina says she has never seen a Mickey Mouse ball before.

Carol’s present to Tina is a Mickey Mouse Nintendo game and watch.

Tina moves her presents out the way and asks the girls to stay there while she gets a chair, the radio cassette player and a present so they can play pass the parcel.   Tina turns the music on and off as the wrapped present is passed around.  Bridget wins the game and it is a box of chocolates after all the wrapping paper is taken off.

The girls go outside and play with the Mickey Mouse ball and practise taking goals.  While they are playing Tina’s poodle comes outside with an envelope in his mouth.  Tina opens the envelope and it is a note to say the party food is on the table ready for them.

Tina blows the candle out on her birthday cake and the girls sing Happy Birthday to her. They talk, laugh and eat together.

They all have a turn at playing the Mickey Mouse game.  There are two hens on each side of the screen laying eggs and Mickey Mouse is standing on the ground with a basket to catch the falling eggs in the basket before they hit the ground. Time has passed quickly and it is time for the girls to go home.   They have all enjoyed Tina’s birthday party.

Toy Characters - Wombles

Colleen and Julie stand in front of a womble handkerchief with their womble toys.   The plastic womble toys are pencil sharpeners that were available in the 1970's.   The soft womble toys were produced for McDonalds in 1999.  The soft womble with the blue top is Alderney.

The wombles live under Wimbledon Common.  The Wombles are the tidiest creatures in the world and they spend a great deal of their time clearing up all the rubbish which people leave lying about.  This is a quote from one of Elisabeth Beresford’s Womble books.

Colleen and Julie have turns reading aloud to each other from the book called, Tomsk and the Tired Tree by Elisabeth Beresford.  Published in 1975.

The Wombles - Shansi’s Surprise – Holder Children’s books – 1998.
Angelina

Tina went to the ballet; Angelina Ballerina’s Big Audition and wore her ballet dress.

After the ballet finished Tina went back stage to meet Angelina and her friend.

Jana's Circus Life

Jana’s parents were the owners of a circus that travelled around the country giving performances in a town and then they would pack up and move on to another town.Jana’s mother made her a ringmaster costume just like the one her father use to wear.

Jana remembers riding into the big tent for a show on Jumbo the elephant.

After he walked around the ring he would bend his front knees and Jana would slide down his shoulder to get off.

Jana would walk over to get the ball and roll it towards him and he would kick the ball back to her. They would do a variety of ball activities together.

Jana also helped in the performing poodle’s act, by holding the hoop which the poodles would jump through as they entered the tent and go and sit on their allotted stool.

One poodle would push the pram around the ring with the chimpanzee sitting in the pram.

One poodle would rescue a doll at the top of a ladder when the clown lit a fire on a platform at the top of the ladder. The clown quickly put the fire out with a bucket of water after the doll was rescued.

Jana use to like watching the horse and chimpanzee performing.

Jana had to stand well back when her father had the lions in the enclosure doing their act.

Life with the circus was a long time ago ponders Jana as she plays with her circus toys. The circus toys are from Cornflakes and Rice Bubble cereal packets in the 1950’s or 1960's.
